Take a walk through the woodland of the Wakoto Peninsula. Where woodpeckers are busily searching for food, Shima-enaga in their fluffy winter whites dart between the branches, and Eurasian Bullfinch nibble at berries and seeds, their cute little bellies happily balancing on the thinnest of perches.

Along the shoreline of Hokkaido’s Lake Kussharo, the calls of whooper swans drift through the winter air as clouds of mist rise from the geothermal springs beneath the lake’s edge. Each year, the swans migrate from Siberia to Eastern Hokkaido, gathering in the pockets of unfrozen water warmed by the natural hot springs that gently trickle into the lake. As snow settles along the shoreline and steam curls into the cold morning light, Lake Kussharo feels suspended between stillness and motion, offering one of Hokkaido’s most atmospheric winter scenes.

Where the shores crackle, pop, and produce a gentle thunderous rhythm as sunlight heats the frozen surface in late winter. Frost flowers rise delicately from air pockets, and birds sing from the surrounding forest of the Wakoto Peninsula.

Listen as snow falls, swells roll in and drift ice dances along the rocky shores of Utoro Port, on the Shiretoko Peninsula. This soundscape was recorded in the midst of a snow storm, as waves increased, wind whipped along the coastline and snow fell across our microphones.

Along the forested shoreline of Lake Akan, the Bokke mud volcano bubbles and sighs beneath the earth’s surface, revealing the geothermal energy that shapes this volcanic landscape. Thick steam rises through the trees as pockets of grey mud slowly swell and burst with a deep, glutinous gurgle, creating a soundscape that feels ancient and alive. The name “Bokke” comes from the Ainu word meaning “to boil,” an apt description for these steaming pools where volcanic gases and mineral-rich mud continuously emerge from the ground. Along the walking trail, the stillness of the forest is interrupted only by the soft popping of the mud, drifting sulphuric steam, and the occasional movement of wind and rustling branches throughout the surrounding forest.
